The safe starting point

Vehicle recovery can release enormous stored energy and can cause serious injury or damage when a component or attachment point fails. This page is a pre-recovery safety framework, not a replacement for hands-on training or the instructions supplied with your vehicle and equipment.

Make the scene safe

Switch from driving to assessment. Check the terrain, vehicle position, occupants, traffic, rollover risk, fire risk and the safest direction of movement. If the vehicle is unstable or anybody is injured, call emergency services and do not begin an improvised recovery.

Move passengers and bystanders out of the recovery area. A tensioned strap, rope, shackle or failed attachment can travel unpredictably. The equipment manual or trained recovery lead should set the exclusion zone for the system in use.

Reduce the load first

Clear sand from the direction the tyres need to travel, identify anything caught beneath the vehicle and consider traction aids where appropriate. The aim is to need less force, not to make a more dramatic pull.

Decide whether the safest method is digging, traction boards, a controlled tow, a kinetic recovery, winching or professional assistance. Each method requires different equipment and training; straps are not interchangeable with winch extensions or tree protectors.

Verify every component

Identify the vehicle-specific rated recovery points from the manufacturer or a qualified installer. ARB explicitly warns not to use a tow ball or tie-down point as a recovery point.

  • Inspect straps, ropes, winch line, soft shackles or rated shackles for damage and retirement markers.
  • Confirm every component is intended for the recovery method and appropriately rated for the system.
  • Follow the product manual for dampers, gloves, rigging, attachment and operating limits.
  • Keep hands away from a winch fairlead, hook and loaded line; use the supplied hook strap where specified.
  • Do not join equipment with an improvised hard object that could become a projectile.

Control the operation

Nominate one recovery lead and agree clear radio or hand signals before loading the system. Drivers should understand the plan, stop signal and intended direction of movement. Nobody should step over, straddle or approach a loaded recovery line.

After the vehicle reaches stable ground, secure it, remove tension as the equipment instructions require, inspect all equipment and record or retire anything damaged. If the first safe attempt does not work as expected, stop and reassess rather than escalating blindly.

Can I recover a vehicle from a tow ball?

No. ARB warns that tow balls are not designed as recovery points and can fail dangerously. Use only vehicle-specific rated recovery points confirmed by the manufacturer or a qualified installer.

Is a recovery strap the same as a winch extension strap?

No. Different straps are built for different loads and behaviours. WARN warns not to use a stretching recovery strap for winching. Follow the equipment manufacturer’s instructions and use components intended for the chosen method.

What is the first step when a 4x4 is stuck?

Stop and assess the whole scene: people, stability, terrain, attachment points, traffic and the resistance holding the vehicle. Reduce that resistance before deciding whether a trained recovery is required.
