Why airing down helps on sand
Reducing pressure allows more of the tyre to contact soft or uneven ground. That larger footprint can improve flotation and traction and can make rough surfaces feel less harsh.
The useful pressure is a range to manage, not a number to copy from somebody else. A light vehicle on tall-sidewall tyres does not behave like a heavily loaded SUV on low-profile tyres.

The variables to check first
Start with the vehicle and tyre information you can verify. If you do not know the tyre construction, wheel size, load or the condition of the sidewalls, stop and check before changing pressure.
- Vehicle weight, passengers, camping load and roof load.
- Tyre size, construction, sidewall height, age and visible damage.
- Wheel size and whether the setup uses standard rims or purpose-built beadlocks.
- Sand firmness, temperature, route difficulty and the speed you expect to carry.
- Your ability to measure accurately and reinflate every tyre before returning to the road.

Manage pressure as conditions change
Record where you started, make conservative changes with an experienced lead and re-check the vehicle. Watch for excessive sidewall deformation, steering changes, rubbing, heat, visible damage or a tyre moving on the rim.
Pressure changes with temperature. A reading taken after driving in UAE heat is not directly comparable with the manufacturer’s cold-pressure label. Use one reliable gauge and note when the reading was taken.

Before returning to tarmac
Reinflate before normal road-speed driving. Inspect the tyre and wheel, confirm valve caps are fitted and compare the final cold pressure with the vehicle manufacturer’s label or handbook when the tyres have cooled.
If a tyre has unseated, lost pressure unexpectedly or shows sidewall damage, do not improvise a road-speed return. Use qualified assistance and follow the tyre and vehicle manufacturer’s instructions.
