Radio Use
Baofeng Radio Basics for UAE Off-Road Preparation
Video overview
What this clip demonstrates
The short demonstrates switching a handheld radio on, adjusting volume and using VFO/MR to move between frequency and stored-channel modes. It introduces the controls; it is not a complete convoy setup or confirmation that any entered frequency is lawful in the UAE.
The device demonstrated is programmable. Being able to enter a number is a technical capability, not authorisation to transmit. Check the equipment and operating conditions with TDRA before use.

Before you try it on the trail
- Check TDRA equipment and operating requirements for the exact radio.
- Charge the battery and read the model-specific manual.
- Agree authorised settings and a communication plan before departure.
Important: Use only approved equipment and frequencies/settings authorised for your use. A programmable UV-5R is not automatically licence-free in the UAE.
Know which mode you are using
The video shows the top knob used for power and volume, then the VFO/MR button used to change display mode. Frequency mode displays the entered frequency; memory mode recalls a programmed channel. A stored channel number is not itself a guarantee that two radios are configured identically.
Use the manual for the exact model you own, ensure its antenna and battery are fitted as instructed, and practise the controls while stationary. Agree the communication plan and test only using equipment and settings authorised for your operation.
The UAE rules matter more than an example number
TDRA’s Private Mobile Radio regulations distinguish authorised radio systems and class-authorised equipment subject to technical conditions. Equipment approval and permission to use a frequency are separate questions. This lesson intentionally does not republish the example frequency as a public convoy channel.
Do not assume a general-purpose Baofeng is licence-free because it can tune to a band used by another type of radio. Confirm your model’s approval and applicable authorisation with TDRA. Navra live convoy sharing can add location context when internet connectivity is available; it does not replace a suitable radio or an agreed emergency plan.

About this Ventrax video
Can I transmit on any frequency I can enter?
No. The radio’s tuning ability is not permission. Confirm the applicable TDRA equipment approval and frequency or class-authorisation conditions.
What does VFO/MR change?
On the demonstrated radio it switches between frequency-entry mode and stored-channel memory mode. Consult your exact model’s manual.
