4WD Basics
Jeep JK Wrangler 4WD Controls Before a Dune Drive
Video overview
What this clip demonstrates
Toby introduces the 4WD controls on a Jeep JK Wrangler. This short is an orientation to one vehicle, not a procedure for all Jeeps or a substitute for the transfer-case instructions in the correct model-year manual.
Wrangler generations, transmissions and transfer cases differ. A JK clip should not be applied automatically to a JL, another Jeep model or a vehicle with a different drivetrain.

Before you try it on the trail
- Identify the model year, transmission and transfer case.
- Read the matching Wrangler owner’s manual.
- Practise the controls in a suitable supervised setting.
Important: Use the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact Jeep. Do not transfer a JK procedure to another generation or drivetrain without verification.
Identify your Jeep before copying the movement
The film’s description identifies a JK Wrangler demonstration. Confirm your model year, transmission and transfer case before using it as a reference. Jeep’s official Mopar owner resources provide vehicle-specific documentation; select the edition that applies to your own vehicle and market.
Read the manual’s instructions for mode selection, required vehicle state and permitted surfaces. This page does not invent a universal neutral position, speed or low-range shifting sequence from a 59-second upload. Do not force a control or assume a mode has engaged if the indication is unclear.
Practise as part of the pre-drive briefing
A supervised beginner session is a better place to learn the controls than a difficult dune with vehicles waiting behind you. Ask the instructor to explain which mode is appropriate to the actual terrain, what the indicators mean and how to return to the road configuration according to the manual.
Then complete the rest of the preparation: tyre checks, the agreed pressure target, communication and recovery arrangements. Use Navra for the meeting point and route reference if useful, while remembering that the app cannot assess traction or select the transfer mode for the vehicle.
